This policy explains what data Lingua Viva collects, why, and how it's used. Lingua Viva is built to work without requiring an account, and we've kept data collection to the minimum needed to make the app function.
What We Collect
Device Identifier
On first launch, the app generates a random identifier stored only on your device. This ID is sent with translation requests solely to prevent abuse (rate limiting) and is not linked to your name, email, or any other personal information — because we don't collect any.
Text and Images You Submit for Translation
Text recognition (OCR) for Scan Mode happens on your device using Apple's Vision framework before anything is sent to our servers — we only receive the recognized text, not the photo itself.
Saved History
Translations you choose to save are stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device storage (SwiftData). This history is never uploaded to our servers or shared with us — it lives entirely on your phone, and deleting the app deletes this history permanently.
What We Don't Collect
- No account creation, no email address, no sign-in
- No location data
- No contacts, photos library access, or camera roll access (Scan Mode uses the live camera feed only, momentarily, to recognize text)
- No advertising identifiers, no third-party ad tracking, no analytics SDKs that build a profile of you
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party service to operate the app:
- Anthropic (Claude API) — processes submitted Latin text to generate translations, context, and grammatical analysis. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy for how they handle data sent to their API.
Data Retention
Translation requests may be temporarily cached on our backend (keyed to the normalized text itself, not to you or your device) to speed up common lookups and reduce cost. This cache contains no identifying information — it's simply "this Latin phrase → this translation," shared across all users of the app.
Children's Privacy
Lingua Viva does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the app requires no account and stores no personal data, there is no profile to collect in the first place.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and, for material changes, note it in the app's release notes.
